Effective fleet solutions

When a large fleet needed to reduce operating costs by 10%, the simplest answer became the best. Hooghiemstra Logistical Services implemented Cartrack’s fleet management technology to help Fabucon Logistics track spend and monitor driver behavior and route choices. This seemingly insignificant detail had far-reaching consequences, as both companies realized for the first time the exact amount of money needed to keep the business growing and developing. Gjalt Hooghiemstra explains: “Cartrack’s fleet management technology has greatly helped us measure actual fleet costs, fuel costs and driver behavior at Fabucon.”

The main goal of the Fabucon fleet management project is to reduce fleet operating costs by at least 10% while improving driver behavior by 50-60%, and to reduce carbon emissions and reduce accidents.

Utilize Cartrack’s extensive fleet management services and tools, such as driver behavior telematics (braking, speeding, etc.), to help Fabucon’s fleet vehicles be operated more optimally by drivers.

Hooghiemstra said the results of the implementation were very satisfactory. “Fleet routes are regularly assessed using Cartrack’s tracking reports to ensure the lowest possible distance traveled is achieved. The package’s telematics capabilities also ensure there are no unplanned maintenance costs, mainly thanks to a significant reduction in speeding and hard braking incidents. "

“We are also very pleased to report that the fleet has had no major traffic accidents over six months, which is astonishing and a fantastic result when you consider that more than 140,000 kilometers were driven seven days a week. The overall result is more appreciable Fuel costs are controlled, accident rates are significantly reduced and the fleet operates at optimal capacity,” added Hooghiemstra.

The project also significantly improved Fabucon’s carbon footprint by reducing carbon emissions by 5.9 tonnes per year. “This is achieved through Cartrack’s fleet management technology, which combines driver training with the rollout of driver incentive programs.”

The end result of fleet management is something called driver scoring, which essentially measures driver performance based on parameters set by the fleet owner. Driver ratings can be used to incentivize good driving behavior, and when combined with fuel consumption, it can have a material impact on a business's profitability.

However, the best is yet to come as Hooghiemstra Logistical Services received the 2011 Green Supply Chain Award for the best project (under R1 million) in the implementation of fleet management at Fabucon Logistics. “It is a huge honor to have our green efforts recognized with such an outstanding award,” said Hooghiemstra. He concluded: “This once again emphasizes the fact that going green is no longer an option but a business imperative. "
